Artist Statement:
Artist Richard Denne continues to explore the idea of collage in contemporary practice. His work is both graphic and bold, being made up from highly edited personal experiences.
Denne tends to work on blocks or series of images, often returning to themes. In recent years these have included a fantasy contemporary ballet, 'Something has to change… (why is it always me?)' , where he stages found images of Edwardian homo erotica with hand drawn realisations of Sol LeWitt's 'Incomplete Open Cubes'; all set on a contemporary stage.
'Damn this place… (makes a boy out of me)' series begins to explore the idea of masculine role models and how they have become a cliche in gay culture.
The most recent body of work 'Fragile… (love replaces fear)' references giving up control for someone you love and the consequences of that action. The work made for the Sussex Beacon Arts Project (Brighton, Naked & Vulnerable) fits into this series perfectly. The City has a mystique of being a gay metropolis, where the streets are paved with gold. Thats not always the case…
Denne completed a Masters Degree in Printmaking (University of Brighton) 2004 and since then has worked from his Brighton Studio
